Southsiders are being encouraged to shop locally throughout the month of September as part of a celebration of the wide variety of quality services and retail facilities available.
Scottish Property Centre Shawlands is one of dozens of local businesses taking part in Southtember, which is part of a wider mission to highlight the value of local sellers and to ensure there’s an exciting and enduring future for the high street.
There’s no more compelling example of the value of purchasing locally than buying a house. As a southside estate agency with years of experience of the local property market, we’re ideally placed to get the best possible selling price for your home.
But we’re just one of many local businesses that makes the southside such a vibrant and thriving place to live, work and do business.
With a history spanning 170 years, Shawlands is a jewel in the crown of the area and we want everyone to use its services facilities to the maximum.
Southtember is a month-long celebration of our local businesses with a personal challenge to help Shawlands continue to grow by celebrating and engaging with the hundreds of businesses that make up the high street, and committing to shop, eat, and use locally for a whole month every year, giving up online and out of town shopping centres for the good of the local businesses on our doorstep.
Can you do it?
One of the earliest and most important businesses in the area was the Crossmyloof Bakery. Originally opened in 1843 by Neale Thompson to supply his workers, the demand was so high for quality, healthy, affordable bread that the Crossmyloof Bakery became a huge business, eventually supplying throughout the Southside to crowds of waiting customers. Today Shawlands still has bakeries bringing artisan breads, cakes and bagels and the crowds still gather.
At the heart of the community is Shawlands Academy which has taught generations of successful southsiders, sending them out into the world equipped with the best possible education.
On Friday, September 20, my old school is marking its 125th anniversary with an open day and, as a former pupil, I’m looking forward to taking part in one of the guided tours being laid on as part of its celebrations.
Southtember aims to remind people what’s on their doorstep and to encourage them to try local businesses that they have been meaning to use but have just not got to yet. Take a walk and try somewhere new, you may be pleasantly surprised!
Scottish Property Centre Shawlands is looking forward to welcoming local customers throughout the duration of Southtember.
